The Queensland government issued an announcement on March 20 that it has selected a location for deploying a 4MW/8MWh battery energy storage system in the town of Emerald in the central part of the state. The announcement claims that the town currently has nearly 2,000 residential solar power generation systems, and battery energy storage systems can store the electricity of these solar power generation facilities, which can reduce household electricity bills.

Construction has also begun on a 50MW battery storage project near the town of Gracemere in Queensland, but the state government has not given a date for commercial operation of the project. One of the 4MW/8MWh battery storage systems will be owned by Ergon Energy.

Queensland Agriculture, Industry Development and Fisheries Minister Mark Furner said: "The huge value of deploying this battery energy storage project in Emerald Township is that it can help provide more electricity for locally operated solar power facilities in the next decade."

Ergon Energy general manager Glenn Dahlenburg added, “Battery storage will give us greater flexibility in connecting rooftop solar, balancing supply and demand and controlling voltage as we deliver more clean energy to our customers. reliability, which is critical to the safe operation of the Queensland grid."

Recently, renewable energy developer SkyLab, also based in Queensland, and Synergy, a utility owned by the Western Australian government, have also announced plans to deploy larger battery energy storage projects.

SkyLab announced on March 9 that it will start construction on the Punch's Creek Renewable Energy Project. The project will deploy an 800MW solar farm and a 200MW/250MWh battery energy storage system.

Meanwhile, Synergy has unveiled plans to deploy a 200MW/800MWh battery storage system, which will be adjacent to a 100MW/200MWh battery storage system it operates at the decommissioned Kwinana power station south of Perth. .
